We spend 30% of our lives at work.
That statistic is daunting, especially if you’re in a job that doesn’t quite fit. But when searching for the right career or trying to find information on how to best navigate the job search, there’s plenty of career advice, much of which contradicts itself:
“Applying to jobs online is a waste of time. Networking is the way to go.”
“Networking is useless and time-consuming. Check the online job boards.”
“Don’t ever talk about that gap in your resume. Hope they don’t notice.”
“Always mention the gap in your resume so you can control the conversation about it.”
“Always attach your resume to emails when networking with people.”
“Never attach your resume to emails when networking with people.”
It’s infuriating. Who do you trust? Who is right?
Everybody seems to have the magic solution, but many times they don’t take the time to listen and evaluate what your specific situation requires. I don’t live in a canned world of always or never, but one that takes the time to hear what you want to achieve and identify an individualized solution that works best for you.
I’ve worked with a range of clients, including professionals, moms returning to the workforce, MBAs, and undergraduates. My experience has taken me to amazing places, working with students and professionals for over nine years at Purdue University and Rice University.
